CD term guide
12-month CDs
The one-year CD is the most widely offered term — which makes it the easiest to compare, and the anchor of many CD ladders.
When people consider a 12-month cds
A one-year savings goal
Money you'll need in about a year — a wedding, a move, tuition — can earn a fixed rate while it waits, provided the date is firm.
The anchor of a ladder
Many ladders are built around annual maturities: buy a 12-month CD each year, or split a sum across terms so one matures every year.
Comparing institutions
Because nearly every bank and credit union offers a 1-year CD, it's the cleanest term for comparing APYs, minimums and penalties side by side.
Stepping out of a variable rate
If your savings account rate has been falling, a 12-month CD locks a known rate for a known period.
Access to your money
A year is long enough that life can change. The typical early withdrawal penalty on a 12-month CD is several months' interest; withdrawing in the early months can cost more than you've earned.
Before committing, separate the money you're confident you won't need for a year from your emergency fund. The CD is for the first kind; the second belongs somewhere accessible.
What to ask providers
- What is the APY, and how is interest compounded and credited?
- What is the early withdrawal penalty in months of interest?
- Is there a minimum deposit, and do higher balances earn a different APY?
- How long is the grace period at maturity, and what does the CD renew into?
- Can I receive the interest as payouts instead of compounding it?
Maturity, renewal and penalties
- One-year CDs renew quietly: if you miss the grace period, the money is typically committed for another full year at the new rate.
- The renewal rate is whatever applies at that time — it is not guaranteed to match the rate you originally got.
- Consider diarizing the maturity date and comparing options a few weeks before, while you can still act.
Other terms to weigh up
- 6-month CDs — you're less certain about the timeline and want access sooner
- 18-month CDs — you can commit longer and want to compare the yield for the extra six months
- 24-month CDs — the goal is two or more years away and you value rate certainty
This is general information, not advice for your situation. Rates, minimums and penalties are set by each institution and change over time — confirm the current details directly with any provider before opening a CD.
