CD term guide
18-month CDs
An 18-month CD extends rate certainty six months beyond the one-year mark — a middle rung between short and multi-year terms.
When people consider a 18-month cds
A goal 18 months to two years away
If your timeline is firm and past the one-year mark, the term matches the money's job more closely than stringing together shorter CDs.
Locking a rate you find attractive
If you believe rates may fall, an 18-month term keeps the current rate for longer than a 12-month CD without a multi-year commitment.
A ladder rung between 1 and 2 years
In a staggered ladder, an 18-month maturity fills the gap so funds free up more regularly.
Money already past your emergency fund
Once accessible reserves are in place, surplus cash with no near-term use can be committed for longer.
Access to your money
The extra six months matters: penalties on mid-length terms are often larger than on short ones, and a year and a half is long enough for plans to change. Commit only money you're confident is surplus for the full term.
18-month CDs are offered by many but not all institutions. Where availability is thinner, compare the APY against simply using a 12-month CD and reinvesting — certainty versus flexibility.
What to ask providers
- What is the APY for 18 months, and how much more is it than your 12-month CD?
- What is the early withdrawal penalty — and is it larger than on your shorter terms?
- Is the rate fixed for the entire 18 months?
- What does the CD renew into at maturity, and how long is the grace period?
- Is the institution FDIC-insured (or NCUA-insured for credit unions)?
Maturity, renewal and penalties
- Auto-renewal on an 18-month CD commits you for another year and a half if you miss the grace period — a long consequence for a missed date.
- Renewal rates reflect conditions at that future date; there is no promise they will match today's.
- Diarize the maturity date when you open the CD, with a reminder several weeks ahead.
Other terms to weigh up
- 12-month CDs — you want wider availability and easier comparison, accepting reinvestment risk after a year
- 24-month CDs — the goal is clearly two years or more away
- 6-month CDs — the timeline is genuinely uncertain
This is general information, not advice for your situation. Rates, minimums and penalties are set by each institution and change over time — confirm the current details directly with any provider before opening a CD.
