CD term guide
9-month CDs
A 9-month CD sits between the shortest terms and the classic one-year CD — less common, but sometimes a useful fit.
When people consider a 9-month cds
A goal nine to twelve months out
If your money has a job roughly three-quarters of a year away, a 9-month term can match it more closely than rounding up to a full year.
Bridging a gap
Between a maturing CD and a planned expense, a 9-month CD can keep funds earning a fixed rate without overshooting the date.
Filling a ladder rung
In a CD ladder, an odd term can fill a gap between existing maturity dates so money frees up at regular intervals.
Expecting rates to move
If you want to reinvest sooner than a year from now, nine months returns access a quarter earlier than a 12-month CD.
Access to your money
Nine months is still a real lock-up. Because 9-month CDs are less common, fewer institutions offer them — which means fewer terms to compare, and the early withdrawal penalty matters just as much as on any other CD.
Before choosing an unusual term, confirm the penalty formula in writing and check whether the institution even offers partial withdrawals — some require the whole CD to be closed early.
What to ask providers
- What is the APY, and how does it compare with your 6-month and 12-month CDs?
- What is the early withdrawal penalty, and is it based on the term or on time elapsed?
- Are partial early withdrawals allowed, or must the CD be closed entirely?
- Is the 9-month term available at all balance levels, or only above a minimum?
- What happens at maturity — auto-renewal into which term, and how long is the grace period?
Maturity, renewal and penalties
- Because the term is unusual, auto-renewal may roll into a different term than you expect — ask exactly what happens if you do nothing.
- Set a reminder for maturity; grace periods are short.
- If the 9-month CD is a ladder rung, plan the destination of the proceeds before the date arrives.
Other terms to weigh up
- 6-month CDs — you may need the money sooner and want the shortest commitment
- 12-month CDs — you can stretch to a year — the most widely offered term, so easier to compare
- 18-month CDs — the goal is further out and you want longer rate certainty
This is general information, not advice for your situation. Rates, minimums and penalties are set by each institution and change over time — confirm the current details directly with any provider before opening a CD.
